VHK (Vágtázó Halottkémek)

VHK/The Galloping Coroners (in Hungarian Vágtázó Halottkémek/abbr. VHK, in German Rasende Leichenbeschauer)

“The Coroners’ music is basic and elemental and filled with obsessive, galvanizing passion.”
The New York Times

Established in 1975, Galloping Coroners (Vágtázó Halottkémek) has been a distinguished cultic band in Hungary as well as in Europe and the US since the mid-1980s. Their original approach to music includes completely free creation of music on stage, liberating long-forgotten vital powers, and is usually described as “shaman punk,” “psychedelic hardcore,” “magical folk music”, with leading singer, world-wide known astrophysicist Atilla Grandpierre. Officially they were forbidden until 1986 by the socialist regime, but their music was so much liked that there were always some organizers who took the risk to be kicked out because of allowing them play. Thus, often using fake names, they were able to play regularly, even if illegally, in large university clubs. After the system change, in the 1990s they became favourites of Iggy Pop, Jello Biafra, Henri Rollins, Steve von Till, etc. and played to tens of thousands of fans all over the world. Their albums were released by Sonic Boom in Europe, Alternative Tentacles and Neurot Records in the US, until 2001 when they dissolved.

In 2009, the last equip (during the years almost 30 musicians performed in VHK) of the band reunited under the old/new name Vágtázó Életerő (Galloping Life Force), but later they simply kept their old name: VHK. VHK’s extremely powerful presence on stage and the power they emanate is fresher than ever. The band refuses, however, to become a “revival” band thus they work on new songs and experiment with new directions. The fans welcomed this reunited formation enthusiastically but VHK decided to give concerts only for special occasions, two-three times a year. Since their reunion, they played in A38, Pecsa Music Hall, and West Balkan in Budapest – this last occasion in 2011 became a historical moment since VHK performed together with their famous fan, punk-legend Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys and his new band. VHK again performed in 2011 in the Volksbühne in Berlin and in 2012 they accepted the invitation of the Open Air Festival in the Czech Republic.

After 13 years of silence, VHK shall release their new studio album “BITE THE STARS” in December 2012. This worldwide long-awaited album presents a rich variety of pioneering new musical experiences and will be available in CD, a limited edition LP, and as online downloads in Itunes. "BITE THE STARS" contains long, psychedelic songs reaching extraordinary dramatic power, like “Moons Towards East”, “Handshake”, or “Inner Universe”, powerful, ferociously energetic pieces like “Hun Brotherhood” and “Celebration of Life”, psychedelic and weird romantic songs like “Falling into Love” or “Winged Sky”. The Hungarians are again galloping around the world and they call to bite the stars every fans!
