Trio Stendhal

Trio Stendhal

László Dés and Ferenc Snétberger first played together at an international film’s shooting in 1986, travelling between Pécs and Ljubljana. Later in the autumn the two of them had already played in a jazz bar in Wesselényi street, Budapest, daily, from 10 pm till 2 am. After a while the musicians had to realise that they don’t just play their usual repertoire but improvise. That’s how a special, new music world with strong characteristics emerged from these night improvisations. The artists wanted to try how it all sounds with rhythm section, so they invited Kornél Horváth and not much later Trio Stendhal came to life. Concerts started, the following year the formation was invited to India, the Jazz Yatra (Jazz Festival).
The peculiar group created a fascinating, unique music world. The themes are melodious though rich in harmony; the forms of compositions are see-through. The sounding is both solid and airy, loosely woven; they might create big dynamic changes within one composition. The music is sometimes passionate, sometimes lyrical, and almost meditative.
In 88’ Stétberger moved to Berlin with his family though they continued working together. By 1990 Trio Stendhal had been a well-known, acknowledged group. The real breakthrough came in 1990. Popularity of the trio had been growing, they performed full-house concerts.
In the following two years the musicians continued the national and European tours from Berlin and Paris to the island of Elba, they even toured round Spain. The final destination was the world expo in Seville, where for a week they played daily.
Meanwhile the band had got tired of playing for seven years, inspiration started to fade. Furthermore the Budapest-Berlin distance had proved an obstacle, so in ’93 they decided not to continue. Trio Stendhal waved good-bye to the audience after two farewell concerts in the Budapest Congress Centre.
